Salisbury Cathedral, or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary to give it its formal name, is located in the Wilshire town of Salisbury. A fine example of what is known as Early English architecture, the cathedral boasts the tallest spire of any church in the U.K. Construction of the main body of the Church began in 1220 and was complete by 1258. The cathedral is of great historic significance. The Salisbury cathedral clock was built in 1386 and is reputed to be the oldest modern clock in the world that is still working. It was restored in 1956. Visitors will find that the clock has no face because during the period in which it was built clocks rang out the time using a bell. Salisbury Cathedral also boasts the best preserved of the four original copies of the Magna Carta, the charter signed by King John in 1215, which became a key text in English political life and an important symbol of liberty.
