Chartwell is best known as being the principal home of Sir Winston Churchill during his adult life. Churchill and his wife Clementine purchased the property in 1922. Under a deal concluded in 1946 between the Churchills and a consortium of wealthy businessmen, the property was to be left to the National Trust. It was to be taken over by the Trust once both Sir Winston and Clementine were deceased, but she presented it to the Trust after Sir Winston’s death in 1965. The house was opened to the public one year later and it has been preserved to look like it did when Sir Winston lived there. There are gifts and memorabilia in the rooms and visitors can also see the original furnishings and books.

The site the property is built on has a long history, with an earlier house having played host to King Henry VIII during his courtship of Anne Boleyn, his second wife and an important figure in the upheaval surrounding the English Reformation. Today, the site is home also to extensive gardens, with many of the features dating from Churchill’s time. The rock garden got Clementine’s attention during the 1948 Chelsea Flower Show and was transported afterwards to Chartwell. The kitchen garden is a recreation of what Sir Winston created himself and it provides fresh produce for the café on site. There are also dedicated children’s trails at Chartwell and a range of other family activities, so you can bring the family for a great day out.

Chartwell is located in Kent, near to the town of Westerham. As such, it is easily reached by road from London and makes for an ideal day trip. There is a statue of Sir Winston on the green in Westerham and visitors might also be interested in the town’s Grade II-listed parish church. A journey from London to Chartwell by road can be done in around 90 minutes. At Chauffeur One, we choose the best routes, taking account of traffic delays. You can unwind to and from your destination with complimentary Wi-Fi or by reading the complimentary magazines onboard.
